The Forgotten City - Exploring the Mayan Ruins of Coba

Some of the most beloved activities in Cancun are visits to the sites of antique Mayan ruins. While many visitors are aware of the world-famous Chichen Itza and abundance of tours visit around Tulum, archaeologists and those in the know often recommend a forgotten Mayan city. Deep in the Mexican jungle rests the city of Coba, an mountainous complex of stone structures and winding roads. Due to its remote location, Coba wasn't explored by archeologists until the 1920s and remains mostly unexcavated. However, realizing the cultural value of the site, the local government constructed a modern road to the site in the 1970s and tours have grown in popularity ever since.

Though known for its stone pyramids, the area of Coba was populated and used for agricultural purposes as far back as 600 Bc. By the 1st century Ad, Coba began to show signs of its eventual prominence in the Mayan Kingdom, sustaining a mountainous habitancy in a more concentrated area. Much like the other great Mayan cities of Mexico, the majority of development took place in the middle of the 6th and 10th centuries - including the construction of the temples and pyramids that can be seen today. It is believed that Coba's habitancy numbered at least 50,000 during this time - unquestionably no small whole for an antique city. Following the introductory decline of the Mayan civilization, new temples were constructed in Coba as late as the 14th century, with many inhabitants remaining as late as the advent of the Spanish conquistadores.

Maya Bay

One of the first things you will consideration when you arrive in Coba is the series of antique stone roads known as sacbeob. In addition to supporting the belief that Coba was a large and influential city during its peak, these roads are the finest example of the Mayan mode of communication everywhere in Mexico. While most of the stones have since been misplaced, the well-defined paths are unmistakable. Some of these roads lead to the Caribbean coast - approximately 25 miles to the east - while the longest pathway is connected to the smaller Mayan site of Yaxuna over 60 miles to the west. Within the city itself, these same roads associate the temples and other structures within an antique model of the urban grid system.

The Forgotten City - Exploring the Mayan Ruins of Coba

The first structure you will consideration along the sacbeob is the pyramid known as La Iglesia. Standing over 65 feet, this steep stone temple is the second-tallest structure in Coba. About a mile down the main road, you will encounter one of the Mayan kingdom's greatest temples. Towering above the jungle at 136 feet, Nohoch Mul is unquestionably a sight to behold. Once you reach the top of the stone steps, however, you will be granted an even more impressive view of the surrounding jungle and Coba's around lagoons. Another beloved site along Coba's winding paths is the Conjunto Las Picturas (Temple of the Paintings), a multilevel pyramid once crowned with colorful murals - remnants of which can still be detected.

Maya Bay

If you also visit Chichen Itza or Tulum while in Cancun, Coba will stand out for reasons other than its impressive architecture. As Coba has only been accessible by modern roads for 30 years, the city hasn't received the attentiveness paid to other Mayan sites. As a result, development in and around the site has been kept to a minimum. For the most part, the structures in Coba have been left in their original state, many still uncovered. For the tourist, this means that the site maintains the antique allure that greeted the first archaeologists nearly a century ago. Furthermore, with the Mexican jungle encroaching upon the city from all angles, Coba is bound to feel as exotic as any place you have ever visited.

Most visitors to Coba experience the site as a day trip from the resorts of Cancun. While there are fewer tours to the site than whether Chichen Itza or Tulum, it shouldn't be difficult to find dependable communication to the ruins straight through your resort. Buses generally leave for Coba in the early morning, as the site is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm. When you arrive, you can view the site with the help of a tour guide, range at your own pace or rent a bicycle and cruise the antique roads of the city. When you've had your share of Coba and the vibrant surrounding jungle, check out the modest gift stalls or grab a snack at one of the rustic cafes.

If you want to seek the remnants of the Mayan kingdom, there are abundance of keen sites within a short ride of Cancun. However, you don't want to forget about the great city of the jungle - the all the time exotic and keen Coba.

Good Vibrations - How to Find Happiness in Your Life and How it Affects Others

Have you ever heard of the saying, "Good vibrations" or heard person say, "I picked up a good vibe from him/her"? Well, here it is. Happiness is created by good vibrations, or rather "high" vibrations. Happy habitancy vibrate in a high frequency within themselves. Some habitancy may be known to be "naturally high" or "always happy" because they naturally vibrate at a high level. Our bodies are moved and operated by power that flows through us. power comes in the form of vibrations or frequencies. When we vibrate "high" we feel happiness. And when we feel person else's high vibration, we feel their happiness too. The power from them is transferred to you and you take on their happiness too. Love, passion, excitement, enthusiasm, and gratitude - these are all high energy, high vibration states of mind and states of heart. When we feel love from person or love to do something it makes us happy and we vibrate high when we are receiving love or doing what we love. When we are passionate about something, the same follow takes place.

The same happens when we are excited and enthusiastic. We've all been to pep rallies or seminars where every person in the room is excited and enthusiastic about something, right? Isn't the power high in these situations? Sometimes it's so high that we can't stand it. And when we have genuine gratitude for the good things in our lives, we vibrate high as well. The happiness is generated by the frequency that we are vibrating at. So, do the things that you love, that you're passionate about, that excite you, that you have enthusiasm for and be thankful for those things. These are the things that will make you happy and influence the habitancy around you as well in a positive way.

Maya Bay

Throughout our lives we are challenged by discrete circumstances and we are often faced with having to make decisions to get us through the tough times or dilemmas. We are often challenged to "do the right thing". Well, the "right" thing is the one that will vibrate higher then the others. If we choose the options that vibrate highest, then that will finally bring us more happiness then the options that vibrate lower. Good decisions, the ones that serve you and others in a positive way naturally vibrate higher and poor decisions, the ones that serve in a less positive way naturally vibrate lower. The more we choose the high vibration options, the more happy we will be in the long run. And the more we do this and are consistent with these high vibration choices, the happier we will become. So bring on those good vibrations and share them with others. Life is too short. Be happy!

P.S. Make sure you laugh too! There's nothing like laughter to raise those good vibes!

Ecotourism Location Numbers Growing Rapidly

A few countries have taken the lead in the relatively new ecotourism industry. But before taking a look at a particular location that has enjoyed new success, it may be good to get an summary of how ecotourism excursions are generating earnings while preserving the environment.

By some measures, ecotourism is already a global phenomenon, with the amount of destinations increasing and the amount of earnings generated growing at an amazing rate. One study, by the voyage industry relationship of America and the Smithsonian, shows that nearly every adult traveler states he or she would be curious in both cultural and historic vacation trips. The branch of Immigration in the Central American country of Belize found that half of all the tourists in 2004 came from the United States, with many among them pursuing ecotourism tours and excursions. This has been the reason for me to take many flights to and from Murcia.

Maya Bay

Industry watchers do not expect this trend to slow down. In fact, examples of ecotourism success are everywhere. In the Lamanai region (in the north of Belize) a great deal of exertion is being made to encourage responsible travel. Some local leaders and tour operators are trying to turn this area into an ecotourism destination, with miniature or no impact on the natural charm of the site. Marketing the region as a holiday destination, these leaders are encouraging photography and study of wildlife without taking samples. A similar exertion is being made halfway colse to the world. Habitancy there are encouraging photographs and study of orang-utans.

Ecotourism Location Numbers Growing Rapidly

The recent, hugely victorious world ecotourism conference in Oslo, Norway was one more example of the growing interest in this field. Australia and Costa Rica, among others, presented encouraging ecotourism examples, showing that thousands, even millions of dollars in earnings are inherent with responsible tourism. Some at the conference reported that the industry might grow 30 percent per year over the next few years.

Maya Bay

One region that intends to be involved in this positive movement is Thailand, where owners and local populations are lasting to gift beach resorts as environmentally sensitive and in a relatively natural state. Jungle lodges in the beautiful African country of Kenya supply someone else essential part of the global ecotourism activity, agreeing to The International Ecotourism community (Ties).

Some destinations have yet to reach the inherent that the local residents and tourism professionals see for them. One idea that has gained popularity is a "green" certification for ecotourism locations. This designation would indicate that efforts are made to avoid environmental damage and to encourage local residents to participate in responsible commerce.

Some in the industry point to Costa Rica as a fine example of what can be done with the literal, motives. While this beautiful Central American country has long been a preferred voyage destination, many want it to become more than just a astonishing holiday stop. More emphasis is being put on using solar power, as just one way to encourage responsible tourism. In addition, some tourism site operators and community leaders in Australia are instituting follow-up studies to see how ecotourism law impact a location. This attention to information may be key in keeping ecotourism destinations on the map.

Things To Do In Cancun, Mexico - My favorite 3

So you have booked your trip to Cancun, Mexico. So what are the top three things to do in Cancun? Cancun is the greatest tour destination for North Americans seeking sun, fun, and a relaxing holiday. While there are a vast variety of activities and things to do in Cancun, I have premium top 3 of my personal favorites based on manifold visits to Cancun. An expanded list would also include eco parks.

Tour Chichen Itza

Maya Bay

Chichen Itza was one of the Mayan's most foremost cities, as is evident by the large number of monuments, together with the renowned pyramid and the largest ball court in the Mayan World. Legend holds that the losers in the game played in this ball court were sacrificed to gods. Chichen Itza is the located 2.5 hours surface Cancun. It can be reached on a day trip via bus tours or by car. If you rent a car, reconsider traveling on the free road, which goes through little touched Mayan country. You can stop along the way and visit the Mayan where they live, and see the way they live. A word of caution: Chichen Itza is a very hot place, so carry plenty of water, enough to drink and splash on yourself.

Things To Do In Cancun, Mexico - My favorite 3

Snorkel in Cenotes

Maya Bay

Cenotes are cave openings to the underground rivers of the Yucatan Peninsula. The maximum depth reached is 50 feet, with great visibility, typically little current, and fresh water. Cenotes were necessary to life as they were the only source of water and revered, cenotes were believed to be gateways to heavens. At Chichen Itza (see above), discrete objects were sacrificed and thrown into the sacred well, together with jewelry and, sometimes, humans.

There are some cenotes colse to Cancun, for example, Cenote Azul, which you can visit on a day trip, and is a delightful place with an overhang from which citizen can jump into the fresh clear pool below. You can also join tours or hire guides to reach more remote cenotes or to do cave diving. Cenotes are unique to Yucatan and are found in no other place in the world, so seek them out.

Sail to Isla Mujeres

A trip to Isla Mujeres with a catamaran is very extremely recommended. You will be wine and dined along the way, and you will get to see the gorgeous island of Isla Mujeres as well as to snorkel in a number of local places. Although it has already been discovered by tourists, this sleepy island and fishing community has retained its calm atmosphere. Long a haven for divers and anglers, the small island lies 8 miles off the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula. You will have a opportunity to snorkel off the catamaran and experience Isla's pristine waters and colorful fish. The catamaran ride is a agreement in Cancun and can be had for less than per person, which includes drinks and lunch. Make sure to bargain.

The only problem with this trip is that once you are in Isla Mujeres, you don't want to leave this lovely place; so make a plan to come back on your next trip.

Cahal Pech

The Cahal Pech Mayan ruins are along the fertile banks of the Macal River in the Cayo district. A spectacular panoramic view of San Ignacio and the Belize river valley can be witnessed from Cahal Pech. Majestic temples, palaces and a ball court are the center of attraction here.

El Pilar

This Mayan site is dissimilar from most of the Mayan sites. dissimilar in the sense that water was in plentifulness around this Mayan site. El Pilar was more than three times the size of the Mayan site of Xunantunich during the first-rate period. Dozens of large pyramids and wide collection of structure have been excavated here. This site is an exquisite place for bird watching.

Cerros

Cerros is the only Mayan site in Belize which is located on the sea coast. Cerros ruins have been found on a northern peninsula in the bay of Chetumal, across the Corozal town. Extensive canal law and utilized raised-field agriculture can be found here. Three large acropolises surrounded some plazas and were flanked by pyramids. The tallest structure here rises 72 feet above the plaza and provides a scintillating view of the bay of Chetumal, Corozal town and the mouth of New River.

Impact

The glimpses of the Mayan architecture and community culture can be seen in the planned communities of Belize like the Progresso Heights community in Corozal district and the Waterside community in the Belize district. The values of community living that thrived during the Mayan culture are still being preserved in the communities of Belize.

mum In Law Abuse - What You Can Do About It

Maya had the dream life. She had a work she loved. She married when she was mature enough to pick a partner for the right reasons. She had a partner, a son, a daughter and a lovely puppy. Add the picket fence and you could say she had it all. On the face of course...

Beneath the face she was struggling with the demise of a marriage due to the malicious interactions of a verbally and emotionally abusive mom in law who was going unstopped in the family. This women had such operate over the men in her family, that she could say and do as she pleased, and no one would stop her from viscious behavior. Maya became the victim of emotional and verbal abuse, first from her mom in law, then her extended family members, and then finally from her husband. She was a extremely educated women, so how could anything so serious be happening in her life?

Maya Bay

The walls came crashing down upon Maya, when her mom in law crossed the line to not only verbally and emotionally abuse her, she repeatedly hurt her child son too. The saddest thing about this situation, is that her mom in law "did not intentionally" verbally and emotionally abuse anyone. Even though she was the old manager of a pre-school, she did not consider that flying into a mad rage directed at Maya in front of her 2 month old son, would finally harm the baby.

mum In Law Abuse - What You Can Do About It

When Maya tried to rationalize with her mom in law not to shout in front of the baby and even set a limit with her mad rages that were in hearing length of her two month old son, she exploded into an mountainous shouting strike of predicted proportions. Maya's then 2 month old son, was quivering in her arms with fear. Maya had one gift as a mother, in that she had mountainous mother's intuition- and she knew my mom in law's shouting verbally abusive comments at her had resulted in sheer terror and fear for her son- from his perspective, he had done something to cause such anger. An child of this age does not have the capacity to deal with hearing an abusive adult. As adults- parents or grandparents- we owe it to our children not to expose them to such emotional abuse.

Maya Bay

Maya's son suffered from the most intense "colic" at that time. He was crying in pain throughout the day, and no one else had the patience to sit with hours of screaming agony from him. Maya knew that her son was a very empathic, emotionally gifted child that was picking up the emotionally abusive nature of her mom in law, and it was manifesting itself physically as "colic". Colic is an animated term for "we don't know what is going on, there are no physical problems, good luck, we could over medicate the baby with addictive drugs to make us all feel better."

During this time, Maya's husband refused to see the connection in the middle of Maya's mom in law's abusive behavior and the grandchild's sickness. Maya had one advantage in that she was extremely educated and could read like a demon when need be. So Maya read all things about the brain gut axis in the infant, and the link in the middle of exposure to emotional abuse and child physical problems. Maya fortunately had the drive to walk away from the situation, with a two month old child and two puppies, and take back her life even when her family was not being protected by her husband.

Interestingly, after Maya's son was removed from Maya's mom in law's house, all the ultimate physical symptoms Maya's son had disappeared. And yet to this day, although Maya's husband and Maya have worked on staying married and communicating through the struggle, as a victim of child abuse himself, the husband is very unwilling to ever see his mom with the lense of reality. It's a sick situation.

However, it's important for women with abusive mom in laws to know you are not alone. You sometimes have to be the strong one to protect your family. In Maya's case, Maya's mom in law had a pattern of abusively force feeding babies. She force fed Maya's husband as an child with a spoon, by holding her thighs over his torso as he screamed and cried in protest. This lady as a matter of fact tried to force feed Maya's son in her home while Maya was on a business call. Fortunately, Maya was gift and able to intervene. The lady never took accountability for her abusive behavior with Maya's son. And interestingly, the whole family, Maya's father-in-law and husband tried to emotionally and verbally strike Maya in defense of this sick behavior. However, over time with compassion, I understand a family with a narcissistic and abusive mom without self awareness, learns to cover up what as a matter of fact happens. They try to make the man who stands up against abuse as the crazy one.

After experiencing from Maya how bad abuse can get from an intimate family member, I have committed my life's work to spiritually medical abuse survivors, so you become the mothers, lovers, and the professionals you deserve to be. I will be publishing a series of articles called, "You're the First", that will be about how women and men have turned around difficult situations, and become extremely prosperous in their own right. Believe in yourself, you can get anything you dream of...

How to Cook Maya Tepeizcuinte (Paca Jungle Rat)

In aspiring to the quest of a free and inquiring mind I often get exposed to the unexpected and sometimes exotic. Such was my brush with Tepe. I have a few Tepes on my jungle ranch and, along with my jaguar and boa, felt it leading to get to know my critters, responsible caretaker that I am and all that touchy feely soft side stuff. The agrarian reform law and my fellow ejido members have legally put me and mi senora in payment of what is allowed and not allowed on our jungle ranch. including an ever expanding Tepe colony. But unlike the jaguar I had no inherent fear of the Tepe. That is until I saw how big it gets.

I won't literally give you the "official" recipe for Tepe here; for that you will probably have to find a Maya like my friend Poot though as you will see it doesn't require special sauces, seasonings or fancy cookware. After all it is a rat...and it's all in how it's cooked: underground, like a rat.

Maya Bay

My authority is Poot, a jungle man who goes out daily into the jungle. I literally enjoy going into the jungle with Poot as there is a whole jungle world that is invisible to most of us atmosphere controlled urbanites. Poot has taught me to respect, not fear, the jungle. The only animal the Maya men truly fear is the jaguar...and that is why they will often carry a shotgun when going deep into the jungle. They literally don't fear Tepe.

How to Cook Maya Tepeizcuinte (Paca Jungle Rat)

Odds are you won't find a real jungle man in Cancun or Playa del Carmen because catching and cooking Tepe is a real skill and art that is quickly lost in the land of street tacos, supermercados and the Oxxo convenience market of Chetumal or Tulum. And no uncomplicated mousetrap will do for this monster. He could eat a accepted trap. So the only ones that hunt Tepe are the Maya. And to find real jungle population one has to literally go to the jungle...just like going after the Tepe. Duh.

Maya Bay

Poot doesn't speak English nor I Maya but we both speak Spanish. When I first introduced myself to Poot he said, "Deal -- that sure is a funny name". I replied, " Poot -- that sure is a funny name". We both laughed and became good friends. On my first trip to the ranch he asked me if I had ever eaten Tepe. I said no as I am from Veracruz and as far as I know we don't have Tepe there. We have rats but not that big...At least I've never seen one and believe me if I had seen one I would have remembered it. Tepe is not the sort of thing one forgets...

Poot promised that before I caught my flight from Cancun back to San Jose I would eat Tepe. I didn't pay it much concentration but on the afternoon two days before our departure he shouted face our palapa that he had trapped one and to come on over.

From the first day we moved to our Maya jungle village palapa our neighbors have brought us food. (Occasionally our neighbors in the Bay Area bring us food but none has ever brought rat.) And since the wife is an exquisite cook and our native Veracruz cuisine is world famous, she returns the favor. I like that. There is something nice about being social and there is something very social about food. And neighbors sharing Tepe with neighbors.

An animated thing about the Maya, or at least in our slight village, is they only kill animals in self defense or to eat. My guess this has probably been passed down from generation to generation for eons and that's why my neighbors think that way. Makes sense. I know Poot pretty well and know the highlight of his day is when he heads out into the jungle...it's his life. In the jungle he and the jaguar are kings. In Cancun or Playa the jaguar is stuffed on the wall and Poot is a day laborer. Poot said he would never leave the jungle. I bet the jaguar says the same thing. I have to leave because I can't raise or hunt sufficient food to sustain us. Yet. Poot wants to teach me but I don't think I could bring myself to stick my hand down into Tepe's hole...

The jungle is literally brutal and unrelenting hence the expression 'it's a jungle out there.' That's why the Maya thrive in the jungle and soft first worlders like me don't. We can't. Well, normally not. Since the Maya are the poorest indigenous population in Mexico, they hunt to eat. I see them sometimes out on our ranch but I would never say anyone if person is hunting to eat. And in watching them I can tell you that hunting animals in the jungle is no fiesta. And I never have heard them brag about killing animals -- even when drinking with my Maya pals in the cantinas where they will brag on just about anyone else.

Those who feel the Maya children should go hungry and spare the critters are fools. Sorry. I love critters too and I will not hunt them but I will not judge a man who is feeding his family. think the alternative which happens all too frequently, especially in the remote areas of Quintana Roo and Chiapas and points south.

Obviously I'm not a sport hunter and not literally even a hunter. Somehow I never literally got a thrill out of killing animals and I killed a fair number back when we lived on the ranch in Veracruz. We raised oranges and I shot hundreds of small woodpeckers that would eat the oranges. The wife would pluck the birds and fry them up...three or four development a very tasty meal. I once shot a seven foot snake. I have killed a number of large chicken hawks. Never did kill any human chicken thieves or orange bandidos though. And never saw a Tepe. Nothing even close.

So for my money, the Tepe is one giant rat. Technically it's not a rat as we urban dwellers know it...but it looks like a rat and has feet and teeth like a rat. It's like a rat except it can get up to 10 kilos or 25 pounds. They are honkers. They live near marshes or swamps giving totally new meaning to the words swamp rat.

Poot makes a stone and stick trap at their den entry and traps them. Zero cost. He'll even pull them out with his hands, something a non-jungle man like me would never consider. He says he is all the time very true as they can literally bite off a thumb. I'm still not interested. He kills the Tepe with his machete. That is one big rat. I will never have to remind myself to not stick my hand down in a Tepe hole. My fingers are fine the way they are...

He skinned the critter, cut it up, laid it on banana leaf stalks over very hot coals, settled a metal card table top over the fire and covered it all in dirt. No seasonings whatsoever. In a slight over an hour we were eating Tepe, a cross between tender chicken and pork. With tortillas and habanero salsa... Yummy! Poot prefers Tepe to other jungle animals. He says the meat is tastier and more tender than weasel or wild pig.

Once or twice a month he gets the urge for Tepe and he sets his traps. It might take him a day or two but sooner or later gets his Tepe. When he has money he eats chicken; when he has no money he eats Tepe. He never goes hungry though there are times when he only eats beans, tortillas and habanero peppers: the longevity diet. And a bit of Tepe. Maybe that's why Mayan's hair doesn't turn gray...or fall out like mine.

If you ever get the occasion to see or eat Tepe, take a look at the teeth on that guy and tell me he's not one big rat. I was so impressed I put a whole Tepe photo album on my blog...who knows, maybe we'll start a Tepe farm. Then again probably not.

How to originate Your Own Mail Order Products

Pick up approximately any book or record on Mailorder Selling and invariably you will find the same advice. When you opt a mailorder product, opt one which:

- appeals to a large segment of the population
- is not facilely ready in stores
- is easy to ship by mail
- is worthwhile
- and a product that lends itself to repeat orders

Maya Bay

Most mail order writers will also tell you to try to accumulate exclusive selling possession to your product. Most writers will agree that a dealer has a best occasion of succeeding in the mailorder company if he has created the product himself.

How to originate Your Own Mail Order Products

All of this is certainly good advice. The problem with it is that it does not go far enough. It does not tell you How to create a product that is exclusively you own. In what follows, I would like to show you, step by step, How to create your own mailorder product.

Maya Bay

I would like to begin by production a very revolutionary statement. The First Step On The Road To Mail Order Success Is Not The option Of A Product! That may sound like a very strange statement, but there are three things you must do (if you want to be successful) before you ever opt a product to sell by mail!

First, you must Analyze Yourself. You will only succeed in selling a product, or a line of mailorder products if you certainly enjoy selling them, if you can be certainly enthusiastic about them, and if they are products you yourself would certainly want to buy.

Second, you must opt Your Market. Once you have analyzed yourself, you will want to sell to habitancy who have interests similar to your own. Only then will you be comfortable in your mailorder business.

Third, you must completely Analyze Your Market. Before you ever opt a product, you should Know what your store is buying, what it would like to buy, if available, and what it will buy form you, in the very near future.

Once you have analyzed yourself, prime your market, and then completely analyzed your market, you will have no problem choosing or creating a product to sell by mail. It will approximately opt you! Now, let's go back and study these three steps, one by one.

Analyze Yourself

To help you understand yourself, sit down and, as certainly as possible, write out your answers to the following questions:

1. When I go to a newstand, what kind of magazines appeal to Me?

2. What kind of books do I certainly like to read?

3. When I daydream, what do I daydream about?

4. What do I do with my free time? (How do I spend my evenings? What do I do on weekends?)

5. What do I do on my vacation?

6. What one field interests me more than any other field in the world?

7. If I didn't have to work for a living, how would I spend my time?

8. If I could go back to college, what subjects would I take?

9. What kind of products do I like to buy by mail?

Once you have certainly answered all these questions, you will see an remarkable pattern emerging. When you have finished, pay a visit to your local library. Go to the Reference Desk and ask to see the latest edition of the Writer'S Market. Sit down and study the Table of Contents, which lists all the main categories of magazines currently being printed. Determine which type interests you beyond all others. It is in that mailorder store that you will be most at home . . . And it is there that you will be most successful

Now go back to the Reference Desk and ask for two other publications. Whether one will supply you with the data you need. They are:

- The standard Periodical Directory and
- Ultich'S International Periodical Directory

I, of course, have no idea what your interests certainly are, but let us, for the sake of illustration, say that you have a compelling interest in Astrology. With a microscopic crusade in the standard Periodical Directory, you will find the name and address of at least a dozen or so Astrology magazines. In Ulrich's you will find even more, since it lists magazines published in foreign countries as well.

Jot down the names and address of each and every publication. Write to each of them, on your letterhead if possible. If you don't have a letterhead, you will still hear from most of them. Tell them you are beginning a mailorder business, specializing in Astrological products, and ask them for a sample copy of their publications, along with their Advertising Rates.

When you start receiving your sample copies, save them . . . And save the advertising rate cards. They will be invaluable to you in the future.

While you are waiting for these to arrive, go to the nearest second-and magazine store and buy a few dozen old astrology magazines. (The cost? Probably a dime apiece!) Get as many dissimilar magazine titles as inherent and be sure to get copies with Mail Order Ads in them. Issues that are ten or fifteen years old will be essential to you, but also try to accumulate some of the more current issues. You are now ready to start . . .

Analyzing Your Market

Start a notebook. Pick up one of the magazines which you have purchased at the second-hand magazine store. Read the first ad. . . Every line of it. Read it gently and carefully. When you have closed reading it, see if you can retell what is being sold in five words or less. If you can't, go back and read it again. If you can, record your record under one of three headings in your notebook:

- Merchandise
- Information
- Service

All mailorder offerings come under one of the three headings listed above. If the ad was for an Aquarian Necklace, it should be listed under Merchandise. If it was for a treatise on Flying Saucers, it should be listed under Information. If it was an offer to chart your horoscope, it should be listed under Service.

After you have analyzed the first ad, go on and study the next ad. Continue until you have completely analyzed every particular ad in the magazine, including the classifieds. When you are through, you will have three lists:

- A list of Astrological Merchandise for sale
- A list of Astrological Manuals (Information) for sale
- A list of Astrological services for sale.

As you read, watch for:

Undeveloped Ideas -- Especially in older issues, you will find certainly good ideas that were, for one infer or another, never developed. Possibly the creator lost interest or didn't have the capital to create his idea. He may have died or he may have run off with a chorus girl from Las Vegas and forgotten all about the mail order business. If you can create the idea, you have a mail order product.

Wholesale Sources -- Watch for ads that say "Dealers Wanted" (in more current issues, of course). Here may be the excellent source of mailorder products for you.

Study The Articles -- They will show you what the readers are concerned in and they will give you clues as to what the readers want to buy. Remember the articles are doing two things -- they are printing articles about subjects which the readers are already interested. But they are also Creating New Interests in the minds of the readers. Can You create A product That Readers Will Want As A succeed Of Reading Those Articles?

You will be amazed at what you will discover when you read magazines from the viewpoint of a mailorder man!

While researching this manuscript, I analyzed three totally dissimilar magazines from the viewpoint of a mailorder man. I would like to share some of my findings with you. Don't worry if the fields are dissimilar from those which interest you. Mailorder principles Are The Same For Every Market!

The first magazine which I analyzed was Astrology - Your Daily Horoscope, December 1975. I would like to begin with the Merchandise Offerings.

Astrology (Merchandise)

The first ad is for personalized stationary. Any mailorder man knows you can sell personalized stationary to any market. But this dealer took a commonplace product and adapted it to the Astrological market. Next to the name and address which he prints on the stationary, he prints the Astrological sun sign and he calls it Zodiac Stationary.

The next ad is for an additional one very commonplace product -- soap! You can buy soap in any grocery store. But this soap is special. It has Your Zodiac Sign imprinted in it, and it lasts as long as the soap lasts. Here is an additional one good example of adapting a commonplace product to the extra interests and desires of your prospective customers.

If you are now selling a product by mail and you would like to increase you sales, make a list of the kinds of habitancy you would like to sell it to. (For example, doctors, waitresses, farmers, gun collectors, etc.) Then go back and ask yourself what you could do to your product to make it appeal to each private group. You'll be amazed at how you can turn commonplace items into red hot mailorder sellers just by taking the time to put yourself in your customer's shoes for a while.

The next merchandise gift is for "Seashells For Virgos And Scorpios". Brother, this is a remarkable idea. Had this advertiser offered plain old seashells in an astrology magazine, his mailbox would probably have been empty. Had he advertised "Seashells for Astrologers", he Might have gotten a few orders. But he made his seashells special, exclusive, and very, very desirable, because they are only for Virgos and Scorpios. He is catching the concentration of one reader out of every six and I would bet that ad was a mailorder success! Here is an idea worth remembering. Try to apply it to Your product!

Another merchandise gift was a "Hand Bio-Rhythm Computer". For the past few years, Astrology magazines have been running record after record on the Bio-Rhythm principles (i.e. Every male and female man has emotional, intellectual and corporal cycles, which can be foreseen, in advance). The Astrology magazines, in effect, have been creating a mailorder store for this kind of new product. The ad promises, "it reveals your emotional, intellectual and corporal state . . . Even Before The Day Begins!" This dealer was clever adequate to do something about this new interest. If he had not studied his market, he could never have discovered the Need for a Bio-Rhythm computer!

Astrology (Information)

People who read Astrology magazines are very concerned in Love, Money, Success, Power, Miracles, Prayer, etc. One enterprising dealer has written six "personal guidance" manuals, and runs full page ads in Astrology magazines, selling them form .00 to .00 each! His ads have been running successfully for years. Back in 1960, when I first became concerned in selling by mail, this dealer was running small ads in mail dealer magazines, selling mailorder manuals!

Here are some of the other data manuals which dealers have written and are selling by mail:

- How the Maya Indians Foretold the time to come - .00

- qualified Words to Be Recited Daily to End Your Money Worries - .00

- How to Spiritually Heal Your Pets - .00

- A by hand on Etheric Astal Projection, written "especially for the Neophyte" - .00

Can you create a Worthwhile by hand for this market? (I predict that the first dealer who writes a good by hand on Bio-Rhythm will make a fortune!) If you need ideas for manuals, study the subjects being offered in the Astrology magazines. Remember --the readers are concerned in those subjects! In the issue of Astrology - Your Personal Horoscope which I read, the following data articles appeared. (This is only a partial list.)

"Yearly Forecast for Sagittarians" "Basic Astronomy for the Astrologers" "Sybil Leek Analyzes Your Dreams" "How to Make Your Dreams Pay Off" "How Mercury Inspires Your Creativity"

A study of Old Astrology magazines will supply you with a wealth of subjects for New Mailorder Manuals (or folios).

Astrology (Service)

If there is one thing habitancy who read Astrology magazines love, it is this . . . They Love To Be Analyzed And Counselled By Professionals. Do you have specialized training in the art of Horoscope Reading? If so, you can sell your services by mail. Here are some of the headlines form ads gift such services:

- "Let an expert Discuss Your Life!"

- "This Horoscope is about You"

- "Now . . . A serious study of You!"

- "Now there is a Horoscope written for the Two Of You! . . .
One for you, one for your loved one! It could mean the
difference between a Happy Marriage and a Painful Divorce!"

- "1976 - 1977 - 1978! Is one of these Your Year of Destiny?"
(This had been running in Astrology magazines for at least ten
years. Every year, the advertiser naturally changes the dates!

Other services being offered in this magazine include:

- Personal Questions Answered by Psychics and Mystics
- Spiritual Readings
- Tarot Readings
- Palm Readings
- Handwriting Analysis
- Questions answered through Astro-Extra Sensory Perception

Are you trained to offer such services through the mail? Or are you concerned in receiving such training? (You will find many such offers to train you in a newstand magazine called Fate.) If you respond is Yes . . . This is where you should begin your mailorder career.

The next magazine I analyzed was the November 1975 issue of Field And Stream. Since this magazine is aimed at two mailorder markets, hunters and fishermen, I analyzed only those ads pertaining to Hunters.

Hunters (Merchandise)

Men who hunt for wild game spend a lot of money on their hobby. They buy top ability hunting clothes. (Who wants to go hunting in a Cheap pair of jungle boots?) They spend a lot of money on their guns, their hunting knives, and on top ability binoculars. There are several dozen well-established mail order clubs selling this kind of merchandise to hunters. If you ar planning to create a one man mail order operation, you would be well advised not to try to compete with these companies. Instead, look for something unique that a hunter can Use, and begin you mailorder company there.

Here are a few merchandise offerings being made by enterprising dealers:

"Deer Hunter's soap" (Bathe in soap scented with the aroma of a female deer and you will attract a Buck. Only .50 per bay!) notice how a smart dealer Adapted a commonplace item to a specialized market. notice too, that he adapted it to Only One Kind Of Hunter. He Didn'T Offer It To Bear Hunters, To Coon Hunters, To Quail Hunters, Or To Game Hunters In General. He offered it to deer-hunters! If you are a deer-hunter, you would notice that ad!"

"Curtain rods for Hunting Vans - .95 a pair." (Sure, you can buy curtain rods in any dime store, but not curtain rods for Hunting Vans! an additional one excellent example of taking a commonplace item, adapting it to a specialized market, and creating a new mailorder product.

Also offered:

- Gun cleaning cloths (10 for a dollar)

- Brass Nameplates for Hunting Dogs (not for just any old dog!)

- Id Tags for Your Hunting Dogs

- Handwarmers and Bodywarmers (Boy, could you use these when you get lost in the snow!)

- There was a small classified ad gift "Fish and Game Rubber Stamps." I hope this dealer got a lot of orders, but if he didn't, I infer it was because his offer was too general. First of all, it would have sold best with an illustrated display ad. But even best . . . Let us go back to the Virgo and Scorpio plan above. How about rubber stamps for Coon Hunters? Or for Pheasant Hunters? Or rubber stamps for Taxidermists? You will always get more orders if you direct your ad to definite people.

Hunting (Information)

Frankly, I was amazed at the whole of data Folios being sold to Hunters. Here are some examples:

"How to Build Your Own Gun Cabinet"

"Duck Calling Instructions" (30 minutes on tape!) A lot of information, in every field, is now being put on cassette tape and sold by mail. If you would rather talk than write, this could be an aspect of mailorder selling for you to consider.

"Chart showing Life-size Tracks of 38 Animals in the Adirondack Mountains" (Incidently not all data is written. A lot of habitancy buy plans, diagrams, etc. To digress, recently a dealer advertised plans to build your own flying saucer detector!)

"How to Build Box Traps - .00"

"My secret on Coon Trapping, after 50 years. Guaranteed, .00"

"Mount fish for Fun and profit - Easy instructions - .00"

"Tan Your Own Hides - Hair on or off - Complete, easy to succeed instructions and Formulas - .00"

"Build (meat, fish, sausage) smoker! Inexpensive, protable.... Easy plans, .00"

"Wild Game and Fish Recipes - Deer, Bear, Rabbit, Trout, Salmon and dozens more - .00"

Can you write an data by hand for hunters? Can you tell him how to shoot ducks? Or how to hunt buffalo? . . . Or what to do for snake bites? . . . Or how to sign up for a Big Game Safari in the wilds of Africa? If you can, write a good by hand (or put it on tape!) and sell it by mail!

Hunting (Service)

Unlike the readers of Astrology magazines, Game Hunters don't give a damn about being analyzed or counselled! But if you can teach his hunting dog how to chase a bear up a tree, then he will probably pay you for your services. Can you heal his gun? Or can you stuff and mount his catches? If so, you can build a mailorder company gift such services.

The final publication analyzed was the Writer'S digest of November, 1975.

Writing (Merchandise)

If you are concerned in the craft of writing (or if you have done well in creative writing classes) you might Determine to build a mail order company catering to the needs of hundreds of thousands of persons who dream of becoming pro writers. Here are some of the merchandise offerings being made to writers:

- "Copyright and linked Laws for Writers"

- "Grants and Aids to Individuals in the Arts - 1500 Sources." (What writer isn't looking for a grant?)

- "I receive checks every week for features, fillers, news. Free details."

- "Gagwriters Guide"

- "Secret Way to Make Money Writing - .00"

- "Make Money Writing Fillers! recent Filler Directory."

- "International Directory of microscopic Magazines and Small Presses."

If you can furnish an data by hand showing writers how to write better, or how to sell their manuscripts, then write it and sell it by mail. You will have Created a new mailorder product! (To get ideas for subjects of interest to writers, study the articles in such publications as the Writers Digest, The Writer, Saturday Review, etc.)

Writers -- (Service)

Some of the largest mailorder company in the world sell correspondence courses teaching habitancy how to write for a living. There are also a dozen or more large printing clubs (called "Vanity Publishers" in the trade) whose sole company is printing books for authors, whose works have been rejected by the quarterly publishing houses.

If you are a serious literary person, with a gift for writing, you could very Possibly create a company gift your services to writers. Here are some of the services which were being offered in the November 1975 issue of Writer's Digest:

- Literary Counseling
- Literary Criticism
- Literary Editing
- Short Story Evaluation
- Manuscript Analysis
- record estimate (No Fiction)
- Ghost Writing
- Newspaper and Magazine Reference aid (Authors often need such a service.)
- Manuscript Typing

Are you qualified to offer any of these services by mail? If you are, you have found a aid to sell by mail! If you are not now qualified, why not accumulate pro training . . . And then offer your services by mail?

In Conclusion

I comprehend that I have just touched the covering of three dissimilar mail order markets. There are hundreds of other mail order markets for you to explore! Analyze yourself and then opt the store that is best for you.

Study your store completely . . . And Never Stop studying It. Most victorious mailorder habitancy read dozens of magazines every month. They Know what their customers are mental about, what they need, and what they will buy.

Successful mailorder habitancy are concerned in the Needs and Wants of their customers First. They understand that if they integrate on those, profits will flow naturally. Those who think only of profits soon pass by the wayside.

In the beginning of this manual, I asked you to write to every magazine in your chosen field. Subscribe to as many as possible. When you have created your first product, then start advertising in those magazines (which is why I said to keep their rate cards.) Never run an ad unless you can run it in three consecutive issues. Then Continue running it for as long as it continues to furnish new customers for you. gently add new (but related) items to your line. Whenever possible, progress your company by inserting your ads in new publications.

Remember these straightforward guidelines:

- Don'T Copy anything Else! You are a unique individual. Express your own individuality in your Mail Order business.

- create Something New And Exciting!

- create Something useful And Worthwhile!

- create Something You Yourself Would Want To Buy!
